RE: THE MICHIGAN OFFICER-INVOLVED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS BILL [INTRODUCED BY THE AUKERMAN FAMILY AND THE MICHIGAN OFFICER INVOLVED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CORPORATION].
On November 04, 2007, Plainwell [MI] Police Officer Kevin Brainard shot and murdered his ex-wife Pamela Aukerman. Their two-year-old daughter, Kayla, witnessed her father pump three bullets into her mother’s body. Pamela’s two children, Kayla and Kyle [15], are now forced to live with the devastation of officer involved domestic violence.
Pamela’s plight as a victim of officer involved domestic violence [OIDV] and her brutal murder, exemplifies how different and dangerous this type of domestic violence is from non-officer related domestic violence. Pamela’s futile attempts to escape her abuser, prior to being murdered, also demonstrate how domestic violence agencies either refuse to assist victims of OIDV, and/or refuse to acknowledge their existence.
Unfortunately, somewhere in Michigan’s DV agencies’ battle against domestic violence and their tremendous efforts to fight for the rights of dv victims, victims of OIDV have been left behind. Victims of OIDV have become the ‘forgotten victims’, for whom no one in the state of Michigan rallies for.
The Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence Bill would acknowledge ‘Officer Involved Domestic Violence’, to distinguish its uniqueness from non-officer involved domestic violence. In acknowledging this distinct OIDV category, laws, policies, assistance, support, etc. can be better directed specifically to victims of OIDV. The most important feature of the Michigan OIDV Bill, will be in acknowledging that OIDV exists and assure victims that they are no longer alone. It will finally give voice to victims of OIDV who have unfortunately been silenced for too long.
I join Pamela’s family, friends, the Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence Corporation; and Michigan State Representative Kimberly Meltzer in asking that you, as a US/State Legislator, support the Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence Awareness Bill, in honor of all those that have or are still suffering from officer involved domestic violence.
Sincerely, the undersigned:
